Local artists to be featured in 5th annual Art in the Courtyard

Works from a variety of local artists will be featured at the fifth annual Art in the Courtyard show scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday in the garden patio of Bistro 45 and the Hotel McCall. On display will include oil, acrylic, pastels, pen and ink, watercolor, photography, fabric art, glass art and more. There will be live music and the event, sponsored by the McCall Artist Connection, is free.
Tickets for a drawing will be sold and proceeds will be donated to support local children’s art programs and projects.

Fairway Park art, craft fair to celebrate 20 years

The Payette Lakes Art and Crafts Fair will celebrate its 20th year Saturday and Sunday at Fairway Park in McCall.
The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
This years show will feature over 80 artists and craftsmen from Idaho and the Northwest.
The show will feature fine arts, stained glass, pottery, woodcrafts, metal sculpture, jewelers, clothing, furniture, soaps, lotions, jams, jellies, spices and much more.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Mat Roos and the basement band. Performing country, folk and original pieces.

Fundraiser to help build fire station August 21

The Secesh Fire District will hold its “Funraiser 2010” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the fire station on Warren Wagon Road about 30 miles from McCall.
The event will include free door prizes, a community yard sale, live and silent auctions, a backcountry bake sale and barbecue. Money raised from the event will go toward completion of the Secesh Meadows fire station.
Among the items available in the auctions are a scenic flight for three, a new, 16-inch chain saw, a new 3,500-watt generator, a cord of wood delivered to McCall, a day of boating on Payette Lake for as many as four people with lunch included, a weekend condo vacation in McCall, and a golf package for a foursome on the McCall course.

Golf course concert Aug. 14 to benefit Snowdon

Jazz on the Green, an outdoor concert to benefit the Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary, has been set for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the McCall Golf Club at 925 Fairway Drive. The concert will feature the Van Paepeghem Quartet, Brianne Gray and the Suzie O'Leary Band. Food and beverages will be available from Epicurean, and those attending may sit on the golf course deck or bring lawn chairs. Tickets are $20. For more information, call Allan Morrison at 634-6554.

NRA plans fundraising dinner, auction

A dinner and auction to benefit the Heartland Friends of the National Rifle Association will be held in McCall on Saturday, July 31.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. July 31 at the Holiday Inn Express/The Hunt Lodge. In addition to dinner, there will be drawings for guns plus live and silent auctions. Roseberry Wednesday Night Concert Series

The Long Valley Preservation Society will again present a Wednesday night concert series starting at 6:30 p.m. July 21 at the bandstand at historic Roseberry, with BJ Wren performing pure country. Those interested in attending are invited to bring a picnic supper and listen to music while enjoying Long Valley scenery. Airband, Dragball Contest set July 10 at Alpine

The seventh annual Adult Airband and Dragball Contest has been scheduled for Saturday, July 10, at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall, featuring a lip-syncing contest and “drag” competition.
The event is sponsored by Better Neighborhoods, a group dedicated to community improvement through performance therapy.
“Every year Airband gets a little more wild and people leave a little more uplifted,” said Molly Shaver of Better Neighborhoods. “It’s hard to deny that pretending you’re someone else for a night seriously raises the community happiness factor.”
Shows are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and admission is $5 for adults 17 and older, only at the door.
There is a $5 entry fee for performers, who will be competing for hundreds of dollars worth of prizes and judged on choreography, lip-syncing and creativity. Performers must call 634-5594 to schedule a sound check.

Airport Fundraiser

The public is invited to join in a Boy Scouts of America fundraiser to be held Saturday June 26 at McCall Airport.
Pilots from around the region will be flying into the airport for an Idaho Aviation Association “Air-Strip Poker Run” and association meeting on Saturday, and pilots will be able to buy a hamburger and hot dog lunch from members of the local Boy Scout troop.
The luncheon begins at noon and a donation of $5 is requested. The Scouts will be given airplane rides by the pilot and the day will help earn participants a Personal Progress merit badge.

The McCall Folklore Society will present a full evening of folk music on Friday, June 18, at the Common Ground Cafe at 303 Colorado St. in McCall. The doors open at 5 p.m. and music starts at 5:30 p.m. The featured performers are The Shook Twins, Elephant Revival and Taarka. The Shook Twins, Katelyn and Laurie, have been singing together since the womb, Laurie plays the banjo mostly, as well as the guitar, ocarina (clay flute), slide, face drum (beat boxing) and also loops her vocals, banjo and guitar to create a full, and eerie ambience or a beat. Gun salute Memorial Event

The American Legion McCall Post 119 will present a gun salute ceremony at several cemeteries on Memorial Day, May 31. The salutes will be held at the McCall Cemetery at 9 a.m., Finnish Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Spink Cemetery at 10:15 a.m. and Holmes Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Refreshments will be served after the Finnish Cemetery ceremony by the Finnish Ladies Aid. The legion honor guard will travel to Veterans Memorial Park in McCall at noon with a 21-gun salute, ringing of the bell and reading aloud the names on the memorial. “It is a time for coming together to remember our ancestors who labored and persevered in the past so that we may enjoy what we have today,” post Commander Kevin Talbot said.

Huckleberry Festival

The Donnelly Chamber of Commerce will host the 2010 Huckleberry Festival after all! After annoucing the event's cancellation earlier this spring, the chamber has decided to host the event on on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15. Several community organizations and citizens volunteered funding and physical resources for the event, event chair Melanie Holmes said. Holmes is seeking additional assistance, and anyone interested in volunteering at the festival or in being a vendor should call her at 315-0865.

McCall plans annual spring cleanup for May 22

The McCall Improvement Committee and the city of McCall have set the annual spring cleanup day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22, to coincide with a “free dump” day at the Valley County transfer station. Volunteers are being sought to help pick up trash and debris along streets, vacant lots, parks, bike trails and other public spaces in McCall. Residents, neighborhood associations and business owners also are encouraged to take the opportunity to tidy up residential areas and commercial spaces. FOr more info call 208-634-3504.

“Inherit the Wind” at McCall-Donnelly High School

McCall-Donnelly High School drama students will present “Inherit the Wind” as their spring production starting Friday at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall. Inherit the Wind’ is an eloquent defense of a human being’s right to think, teach, and learn,” director Judy Anderson said. “As such, it is respectful of the contribution of both religion and science to the human search for meaning and connection. Starring as attorneys for defense and prosecution are Andy Bursness and Zach Bennett; Luke Jensen plays the biology teacher, Sarah Lenda is the minister’s daughter, and Logan Gullickson plays the Rev. Brown. Tim Daniels plays the cynical reporter from Baltimore, and John Gilmer plays the judge. Eighteen other students round out the cast starring as townspeople, witnesses, jury members and officials.

The Payette Pakes Ski Patrol held its annual banquet April 3 -- here at The Holiday Inn Express/The Hunt Lodge. More than 150 patrollers, family and friends attended. Honors and awards were presented to Clark Noble, Scott Bourne, Chris Vetter, Scott Acker, Doug Scarlett and Tim Bailey, and special recognition to Kyle Scarlett, age 16, as the youngest person to become a member of the Payette Lakes Ski Patrol.

McCall business Easter egg hunt April 3 to aid Ospreys

McCall business owners will again take part in a community Easter egg hunt to benefit the McCall Ospreys women’s hockey teams.
The hunt is open to adults and families all day on Saturday, April 3, in front of businesses all along McCall’s commercial corridor plus in Legacy Park.
The eggs will be hidden outside the businesses and will contain certificates for such prizes as a jet ski rental, cash, discount coupons, candy for the children, and special offers or in-store promotions.
The sponsoring businesses purchased the eggs for $1.50 each with proceeds to benefit the Ospreys.

Baritone Chris Thompson and pianist Steven Spooner will present Schubert’s “Winterreise” at 6 p.m. Sunday at McCall Community Congregational Church at 901 First St. Pianist Steven Spooner, above, will join with baritone Chris Thompson to present Schubert’s “Winterreise” at this weekend’s Second Sunday Sounds @ 6 recital.The concert is part of the Second Sunday Sounds @ Six series. Thompson, an assistant professor of voice and opera at the University of Idaho, is described as a lyric baritone who has had a varied performing career singing a variety of opera roles throughout the United States and England.

Women With Bait draws 554 anglers to Salmon River

The 15th Annual Women With Bait Fishing Derby officially ended with 554 female anglers taking part during one of the hottest steelhead seasons on record. “We had incredible fishing this year and our community really welcomes these steelhead anglers,” said Kim Friend of River Adventures Inc., of Riggins, the sponsor of the tournament. Derby competitors landed 912 steelhead on the Salmon River at Riggins between Feb. 1 and March 6 compared to 326 landed during last year’s tournament, Friend said.

Langroise Trio to perform music of Jim Cockey March 6

The Langroise String Trio will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Community Congregational Church in McCall, performing works by McCall composer Jim Cockey and Antonin Dvorak. Members of the trio will present free master classes at 5:30 p.m. at the church for local string instrument students. Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors older than 60 and children younger than 12. The first 25 people attending will be admitted free of charge.

Brewery to celebrate anniversary with fundraiser

Salmon River Brewery in McCall will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 27, by holding a day-long food drive and fundraiser for the Heartland Hunger Resource Center. Those who bring a bag of pasta, box of cereal, bag of sugar or flour, or more, will get one free pint of fresh beer or one soda. For every beer purchased, the brewery will donate $2 to the Hunger Resource Center. Following the dinner hour, McCall’s own Glenn Kelly will perform music to add to the party atmosphere. The brewery is located at 300 Colorado St.

Chocolate & Bourbon at The Hunt Lodge

Bourbon flowing and chocolate piled high was the order of the day Feb. 4 at the Chocolate and Bourbon Tasting here at the Holiday Inn Express-The Hunt Lodge. A good time was had by all at the event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There were many bourbons to taste ranging from Jim Beam Black Label and Maker’s Mark to limited release single malt. Chocolate was provided by the McCall Candy Co., which offered a variety of light to dark chocolates.
Each ticket holder received six total tastes of either exquisite chocolates or fine bourbon. ..and of course extra taste tickets were available! All proceeds from this event will go to the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation to fund 2010 education grants.

Evening of ‘poetry play’ Feb. 10

Torches in Carnival Parade

The Winter Carnival Parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church at the corner of First and Park streets in McCall. Parade line-up runs from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., and cookies and hot chocolate will be served during that time. Each child will carry a paper lantern safely lit with LEDs. Since the theme of the 2010 McCall Winter Carnival is “Wild Idaho,” wild attire is encouraged, whether it be animal or crazy, colorful costumes.
A Winter Carnival tradition is returning with this year’s Children’s Torch Light Parade – actual torches – but they will not be in the hands of the children. Instead McCall Fire and EMS personnel will carry the torches.

Winter Travelogue Series Begins

The McCall Public Library will launch its Winter Travelogue Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, with Rick and Nancy Harvey’s one-hour DVD compilation of their many trips to central Spain. “The Spanish Plain” offers a historical perspective from Spain’s sudden rise to being the first global empire 400 years ago to its eventual downfall and place in today’s world. The event is hosted by the Friends of the McCall Public Library.

Pianist at Congregational Church

McCall pianist Suzi Smith and her lifelong friend Diana Belka will perform piano duets by Mozart, Schubert, Debussy and others at 6 p.m. Sunday at McCall Community Congregational Church. Belka was born in Twin Falls and studied piano with Teala Bellini and later in Salt Lake City with Frederick Diion while obtaining a degree in musicology from the University of Utah.
She is currently chairman of the Sandy “B” chapter of the Utah Federation of Music Clubs overseeing 200 students in Federation Festival auditions.

Donnelly Snowmobile Family Fun Run

The Donnelly Snowmobile Family Fun Run will be held on Jan. 2 on snowmobile trails on West Mountain, starting at the snowmobile warming hut at the Tamarack Falls Trailhead on West Mountain Road. Registration is from 9 a.m. until noon, and the entry fee is $5. The snowmobile ride is easy and fun for the entire family and follows a well marked, groomed trail on West Mountain. At various points along the way, riders stop at check stations and draw chips for a chance to win prizes. Santa will share a favorite book before inviting children to sit on his lap and have their picture taken. The event is free and open to the public.

'Wild Idaho’ is Winter Carnival Theme

“Wild Idaho” has been chosen as the theme for the 2010 McCall Winter Carnival to be held Jan. 29, through Feb. 7. This year’s theme was suggested by Rick and Linda Nargie, longtime carnival volunteers.
The theme presents several possibilities to snow sculptors, including wildlife, snow events and whitewater rafting.
The sponsoring McCall Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a meeting for event managers and volunteers for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the meeting room at Western Mountain Lodge.
Chamber officials are asking that anyone who is interested in helping out with the carnival this year attend the Dec. 16 meeting and let them know who the volunteers are and what they would like to do.

Christmas Carol-Along to be held Dec. 13-14. The sounds of the season will be featured at the “Christmas Around the World,” the theme of this year’s Community Christmas Carol-Along in McCall. The musical event will be held on two nights, Sunday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., at the McCall Community Congregational Church, 901 First St. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. The McCall Chorale and the McCall Community Children’s Choir will perform traditional Christmas favorites from Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa under the direction of Tyler Vance.

Foresters to host Loveall benefit Nov. 27

An event to benefit Vern Loveall starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at The Foresters Club & Doghouse Saloon and features live music, a silent auction and raffles. Loveall, of Crusty’s Pizza, recently had a brain tumor removed and is scheduled to start radiation treatments soon. Proceeds from the event will help offset the expenses to Loveall and his family. The musical line-up includes Carter Freeman at 6 p.m., Jay Nelson at 7 p.m., Joel Hellerman at 8 p.m., Jonathan Warren & The Billy Goats at 9 p.m., Scott Tyler at 10 p.m., Jeff Crosby at 11 p.m. and Voice of Reason at midnight.
Help is needed and organizers said auction and raffle items can be dropped off at Crusty’s Pizza during business hours.

Tillotson Trio concert Friday moves to Hunt Lodge

The Paul Tillotson Trio will perform in McCall on Friday to benefit Crystal’s Corner. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at The Holiday Inn Express/The Hunt Lodge in McCall. The location was moved since a story appeared in The Star-News last week. Wine and snacks will be served.
Crystal’s Corner is the name given to fundraising efforts to aid Crystal Heimgartner, a McCall resident who is being treated for ovarian cancer.

Ski club announces Canned Cuisine Cook-off Nov. 20

The Payette Lakes Ski Club-Nordic has scheduled a Canned Cuisine Cook-off contest from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the Little Ski Hill to benefit the club and the local food bank. To enter the cook-off, pay a $20 fee, bring a dish prepared in accordance with the rules, and bring the nonperishable contents of the dish to donate to the food bank. Taste-testers are also needed, prizes will be awarded and those wishing to enter may show up at 6 p.m. on the day of the contest and fill out a form, but are asked call 634-3370 .

McCall Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Holiday Happening has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Shore Lodge. The theme for this traditional kick-off to the holiday season is “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The event centers on a luncheon featuring a fashion show, music, silent auction and raffle prizes. Winter Sports Swap Nov. 1

The Payette Lakes Ski Club will hold its Ski and Winter Sports Swap from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Payette Lakes Middle School in McCall.
Admission is $2 per individual or $5 for a family. Those paying $25 can gain admission 30 minutes early.
Those with items to sell should bring them by the school from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Payette Lakes Ski Club offers after school programs for ages 5 to 12 with a variety of ski and snowboard programs that accommodate all levels of riders.

A series of events will continue this weekend to Crystal Heimgartner, who is battling ovarian cancer and has no health insurance.
McCall Chiropractic: On Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, McCall Chiropractic will treat its regular patients for free.
Any donations will be given to Crystal’s Corner and new patients will receive half off the normal fee with $10 donated.

Foresters Club: Clients of McCall Chiropractic will be able to test out their tuned-up limbs at Foresters Club/Dog House Saloon Saturday evening when an “80s Party!” will begin at 9 p.m. Those attending should appear in 1980s dress and hair, with the $3 cover charge going to Crystal’s Corner.
Bistro 45: On Sunday, wine tasting and a silent auction will be held at Bistro 45 in downtown McCall. Donations of auction items are now being accepted.

The sixth annual World Culture Day

The sixth annual World Culture Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the McCall Public Library, giving children and families the opportunity to learn more about food, art, music and books from around the world. The free event will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. outdoors in front of the library at 218 E. Park St., weather permitting. In case of poor weather, the event will move indoors to the McCall Community Congregational Church. Volunteers will be on hand representing local Nez Perce and Finnish heritage, and there will be food and games from Indonesia, Russia, Ireland, India and South Africa. There will also be traditional Native American face painting and sidewalk games from Norway.

Fitness Challenge Benefit Event

A fitness challenge, a luncheon and concert are among the events to be held to benefit a McCall woman battling cancer, on Saturday, Oct. 10, Legend CrossFit will host a fitness challenge starting at 11 a.m. at Brown Family Park. Participants will be challenged to complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes consisting of five pull-ups, 10 pushups and 15 squats. Snowdon Lunch and Tours

Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary will host a picnic lunch and tours of the facility near McCall on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The event begins at noon, with lunch served until 1 p.m. and bird programs and tours held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Snowdon is located seven miles east of McCall on Lick Creek Road. The sanctuary cares for injured animals until they can be returned to the wild. For information, call 634-8050.

Ida-Ho-Down Aug. 22 will feature nonstop music! The Ida-Ho-Down, an annual reunion concert that brings together several bands for a day-long concert, has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at Brundage Mountain Resort. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the gate, and are available at Common Ground Cafe in McCall or online at www.inticketing.com/events/43494/Ida-Ho-Down.com.
Music is scheduled to start at noon and continue until at least midnight. Among the featured bands are Equaleyes, The Shook Twins, Voice of Reason, Polyphonic Pomegranate, Stoney Holiday, The Fav, Cosmic Family Band, AlpenFlow, Perry Garfunkel and the Disappearing Delta, and GlennKelly.
Ticket-holders may purchase a scenic chairlift ride ticket for $5. Food, beer and cocktails will be available to purchase during the concert. No outside coolers or dogs are allowed in the concert area.
Camping will be available, and coolers and dogs on leashes will be allowed in the camping area. Campfires are prohibited.

Valley County Fair and Rodeo

The Valley County Fair and Rodeo gets under way Tuesday and continues through Saturday, Aug. 8, at the fairgrounds in Cascade, offering free admission and free entertainment. The theme of this year’s event is “It’s a Family A-Fair.” Rodeo events begin Wednesday with team roping, while on Thursday, Aug. 6, the Pee Wee and Junior Rodeo take center stage, with mutton busting set to start at 6 p.m. The Junior and ICA Rodeo is set for Friday, Aug. 7, with mutton busting getting started at 6:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, Aug. 8, it’s time for the ICA Rodeo, with mutton busting getting things going at 6:30 p.m. A full slate of activities are planned for Saturday, including a kindergarten rodeo, junior tractor rodeo, backhoe rodeo, Dutch oven cook-off contests, cookie contest, pie contest, watermelon eating contest, and horse, dog and livestock shows. A buyer’s barbecue is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 8, and the 4-H Market Animal Sale is planned for 3:30 p.m. the same day. Entertainment for the fair includes B.J. Wren, DJ Dennis Anderson and the Steve Wall Band. A teen dance and family dance are also scheduled.

Alpine Plaza to offer outdoor movie nights

Alpine Village in McCall will present a series of free outdoor Friday night movies under the stars. The movies will be shown at about 9 p.m. each week at the project’s plaza projected on a 14-foot by 25-foot screen. Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, favorite beverages and a picnic or enjoy food and refreshments from local vendors. “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in 3D will be shown on July 31, “Paul Blart Mall Cop” on Aug. 7, “Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” on Aug. 14 and “Bolt” on Aug. 28. Mountain Triathalon Aug. 1

The nonprofit Little Ski Hill will host the annual Mountain Triathalon on Saturday, August 1 at Upper Payette Lake.
