Chamber event Saturday to fund fireworks

The McCall Area Chamber of Commerce will host a McCall Winter Carnival Fireworks Fundraiser on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Foresters Club.
An incorrect date are noted in The Star-News last week. Live music will be performed by B4Zero and door prizes will cap off the event.
All proceeds from the $5 cover charge will go directly to funding the two fireworks shows scheduled for the beginning and end of the carnival.

Idaho chefs to collaborate at Rupert’s on Sunday

Rupert’s at Hotel McCall will host a unique Italian Wine Dinner on Sunday that blends the culinary minds of two of Idaho’s top chefs.
Chef Gary Kucy of Rupert’s and Chef Richard Langston of Café Vicino in Boise, have teamed up to develop a mouth-watering menu.
Dishes include mushroom filled cannelloni, pork belly braised in orange and star anise, and braised Niman Ranch lamb shoulder. Each of the five courses will be paired with a special selection of Vietti Wine.

Cascade seniors plan New Year’s Eve bingo

A $500 prize is up for grabs during the Cascade Senior Citizens Center’s Mega Bingo to be held on New Year’s Eve.
The fun begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, at the center, located at 409 School St. in Cascade.
The final game of the night will be a blackout, with the winner celebrating the new year with $500.

Heartland Community choir

The annual tradition of holiday magic and music continues on Friday at the Best Western Plus Salmon Rapids Lodge in Riggins.
The free Gifts of Music concert will start at 7 p.m. Friday and feature The Heartland Community Choir.
The concert is free and will be set beside the river rock fireplace and decorated tree in the lodge’s Big Salmon River Room.
The choir will present a Christmas musical collection entitled “The Greatest Gift of All.”
Director Julie Good of New Meadows will lead the group in traditional Christmas carols as well as original songs. Choir members from New Meadows to Riggins will lend their voices to this memorable evening.
The Heartland Community Choir will also perform at 11 a.m. Saturday at McCall Seventh-day Adventist Church at Rock Flat west of McCall and at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the New Meadows United Methodist Church.

Tour of the Trees to feature 30 trees

The first Tour of the Trees event begins on Friday and will run through Friday, Dec. 2.
The event is intended to be similar to the Festival of Trees that was held for many years but which is not being held this year.
Trees will be set up at each participating business and visitors may place silent auction bids on each.
The winning bidders will take home the trees and their payments will be given to a charity or nonprofit group selected by the sponsor.

Cascade Legion to host free Thanksgiving dinner

American Legion Post 60 of Cascade invites friends and neighbors to enjoy a free Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Legion hall.
A traditional feast with all the trimmings will be served 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
“This event is a tradition at Post 60 where we can serve our friends and supporters and give thanks for the blessings of this wonderful community,” post commander Mike Keithly said.
Those who may be housebound should call Joe Posluszny at 382-3694 or (208) 861-9500 before 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day to have a meal delivered to their home.

‘Destination Adventure’ theme of 2012 winter carnival

“Destination Adventure” has been selected as the theme for the 2012 McCall Winter to be held Jan. 27 through Feb. 5. The first volunteer meeting for the carnival has been set for Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at The Hunt Lodge. The meeting will organize event chairs and volunteers as well as conduct an open discussion on suggestions for the carnival. A tentative schedule for the 2012 includes the return of many popular events, including the Mardi Gras Parade, Monster Dog Pull, fireworks over Payette Lake, Snowshoe Golf, Bingo, chocolate and wine tastings, Monte Carlo Night and the Beard, Hairy and Sexy Leg contest. Smithsonian exhibit to open in McCall Oct. 29

"The Way We Worked," a traveling exhibit of the Smithsonian Institution, will open in McCall on Oct. 29 and run through Dec. 11.

This photo of a submarine builder at Electric Boat Company in Groton, Conn., in August 1943 is among the images to be featured in “The Way We Worked.”
The multimedia exhibit will be on display Tuesdays through Sunday at the McCall Art + Commerce Center 125 Commerce St.
"The Way We Worked" is composed of materials from the National Archives and explores of the role of work in people's lives and in shaping local and national identities.
The exhibit features photographs, audio components, historical objects and interpretive materials.
McCall is one of six Idaho community to host the exhibit this year and in 2012.
In addition to the exhibit itself, local businesses, organizations and individuals are planning local exhibits and events.
A kick off to the exhibit will be held on Friday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the McCall Community Congregational Church in downtown McCall.

Find a good deal at the Payette Lakes Ski Swap Oct. 23

Bargains on skis, snowboards, accessories, clothing and many other items can be found at the annual Payette Lakes Ski Club Ski Swap on Sunday, Oct. 23.
The event will be held at the Payette Lakes Middle School gym and begins on Saturday, Oct. 22, when items for sale can be dropped off between noon and 4 p.m.
Then on Sunday, Oct. 23, the doors will open for bargain hunters at 10 a.m. Admission is $2, but early-bird shoppers can get in at 9:30 a.m. for a special $10 fee.
A portion of each sale will benefit the Payette Lakes Ski Club, the nonprofit organization that operates the Little Ski Hill alpine hill and the nearby Bear Basin Nordic ski trails.
Season passes for the Little Ski Hill and Bear Basin will be sold at the swap. Also, registration will be taken for this year’s after-school ski program starting in January. Cost is $275 for the eight-week program, and instructors are needed. For more information, call 634-5691.

Snowdon to open sanctuary to public

The public will get a rare chance on Saturday, Oct. 1, to see orphaned and injured animals being cared for at Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary east of McCall.
The annual Lunch on the River will begin at noon with a program scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by tours of the facility.
Executive Directory Linda DeEulis will lead the talk with one of the birds used for education, and Snowdon’s new educational dome open.
The sanctuary is normally closed to the public to avoid human contact with the animals that might hinder their return to the wild.
The sanctuary is located on Lick Creek Road seven miles east of Payette Lake. Turn right at the end of the pavement. Call 634-8050 for details.

The Finnish Ladies Aid Auction will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at the McCall Senior Citizens Center located at 705 First Street.

Art on the Lake, street dance set for Sept. 17-18

The third annual Art on the Lake and McCall Fall Street Dance has been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, at East Lake Street and Legacy Park in downtown McCall.
The celebration of the arts will bring together a diverse group of artists and crafters, food vendors, musicians and a beer and wine garden.
The event will also include a street dance from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday sponsored by Idaho First Bank.
The dance will feature a line dancing group with Zumba from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by an open dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with DJ Dennis Ackerman.
A number of fine artists and crafters will be on hand for the event, including Hangloose Hammock Company and Recap with Brandi.

Cascade American Legion to host 9/11 event

An event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11, in front of the American Legion Hall in Cascade.
The event will get under way at 8:46 a.m., the time the first aircraft struck the World Trade Center in New York City 10 years ago.
The legion will be joined by members of Cascade Fire & EMS, emergency medical technicians, the Valley County Sheriff’s Office and the Cascade Police Department.
A prayer will be read in memory of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and for members of the Armed Forces and first-responders who have given their lives in the war on terror.
The flag will be lowered to half staff, a three-volley rifle salute will be held and “Taps” will be played in tribute.

Cascade to host Chalk on the Walk

The second annual Chalk on the Walk benefit event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in downtown Cascade on Main Street.
The cost to enter is $5 and each artist must have a sponsor. Those without sponsors will have one provided by organizers. Each artist will receive a spray bottle, package of pastels, a sidewalk square and ice cream supplied by the Cascade Store.
Those who sponsor an artist for $25 will get their name displayed with the artist’s creation.
Money raised from the event will be used to support Cascade Schools’ music and art departments.

Wooden boats to be on display at Shore Lodge Aug. 12-14

The sixth annual boat show put on by the Payette Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society will be held next month at the Shore Lodge in McCall.
Organizers expect about 40 wooden and classic boats to participate in the show, which will be held Friday through Sunday, Aug. 12-14.
Scheduled activities get under way at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, with a boat parade from Shore Lodge to downtown McCall. The boats will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
There will be a run to North Beach starting at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and members of the public are invited to talk to individual boat owners about accompanying them on the run or the parade. Admission to the show and to view the boats is free.
The artwork features a 1950s-vintage Chris-Craft, with a father and son out for a day of fishing as their boat passes the historic Brown Tie & Lumber Sawmill.

The Cascade Air-A-Fair

The Cascade Air-A-Fair will go on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5-6. The weekend gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Kelley’s Whitewater Park with a barbecue, music by the Neil Nelson Band and the Nite Glow illumination of hot air balloons.
Admission-only tickets to the event are $5. Dinner packages are $17 for Kobe Beef barbecue ribs.
Saturday, Aug. 6, will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast served at Cascade Airport by members of the Cascade Senior Citizen Center. Cost is $6.
During the morning, the public can tour displays of parked aircraft at the airport and enjoy flights by remote-controlled aircraft. There will also be activities for children. Admission is free to the morning events as well as the air show.
Aerobatic performances are scheduled to begin at noon and feature Scotty Crandlemire in his Pitts S-2B, David Erickson in a Super Chipmunk, Mark Peterson performing in a P-51, Paul Janes in his C-182, Ed McGinty flying a Super Cub and Mike Reed piloting a Harmon Rocket 3.
Hot air balloon rides will be available, along with tandem skydiving. The event will also feature a missing-man formation to honor two of Idaho’s fallen soldiers and others who have given their lives for the country.

Alpine Playhouse to present ‘Eurydice’ in seven performances

The summer production of “Eurydice” will open its seven-night run at 8 p.m. tonight at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall.
Advance tickets are $7 and are available at McCall Drug. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. each night.
The play is a modern re-telling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, two lovers who are separated on their wedding day.
Orpheus, the demigod of music, uses his lyrical powers to find his beloved. This version focuses more on the emotional plight of Eurydice, a young woman torn between two loves.

Local and regional bands playing on two stages will be the scene at the 2011 Idaho-Down Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5-6, at Brundage Mountain Resort.
The Friday line-up includes Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles, Jeff Crosby and The Refugees, Shepa, Jonathan Warren and the Billygoats, The Pour House, Voice of Reason, LadyTramp and the Sloppy Hogg Trio.

Ice shows July 15-17 to feature Lambert, Palascak

Tickets are now on sale for “Skating Through the Decades,” an ice show to be shown in five performances next month at the Manchester Ice and Event Centre.
The shows are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 15-17, will be available at the rink, at Paul’s Market and McCall Drug.
Tickets are also available in advance by calling 634-3570. Show times are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 15-16, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17.
Tickets are $15 for adults ages 13 and older, and $12 for children 12 and younger.
The show is directed by Lori Benton, a world professional figure skating champion and figure skating instructor at the rink.
All proceeds from the show will benefit the Richard Sabala Foundation, which owns the rink, and its skating programs.

Centennial, Street Fair and BBQ

The city of McCall will celebrate its 100th year of incorporation on Tuesday, July 19, with a street fair downtown.
The street fair will take place on Second Street between the McCall Public Library and Manchester Ice and Event Centre from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A community barbecue, beer and wine garden, and live music will be staged at Depot Park from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Special events include Zumba dancers performing at Legacy Park at 7:30 p.m., followed by the official 100th birthday celebration at 8 p.m. featuring a centennial birthday cake and ice cream.
The McCall Centennial Committee is also urging citizens to celebrate the centennial with their own personal “Project 100” event.
Participants could walk 100 miles, plant 100 flowers or take part in other activities that reflect the centennial theme.
Business owners are being asked to promote a “Centennial Special” for the week leading up to the July 19 birthday. The promotion could offer an interesting twist on 100 years, such as selling an item for 100 cents.

Thunder Mountain Days to feature parade, food and more

Cascade has a whirlwind of activities planned for the 2011 Thunder Mountain Days celebration over the Independence Day weekend.
Participants can fuel up early at the Buckaroo Breakfast, which starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, at the Masonic Hall.
The Main Street Parade through town is slated for 11 a.m. July 2.
The grand marshal of the parade is Ruth Trent, a dedicated quilt maker who has made thousands of quilts for nursing home residents and others.

Lunch is next at the Lions Club’s Pit BBQ at noon at Armstrong Park.
The holiday adult softball tournaments will run both Saturday and Sunday at the Cascade Sports Park.

Kaleidoscope arts festival slated for June 25

The McCall Arts and Humanities Council will present its annual Kaleidoscope Children’s Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, on the lawn in front of the Central Idaho Historical Museum in McCall.
The festival is free and offers children of all ages the opportunity to engage in hands-on arts and crafts projects at a variety of booths.
The event will feature such activities as tie-dying, paper airplane design, woodcrafting, clay play, painting, dress up, movement, music and more.
Younger children will enjoy the Tactile Tunnel, which was a hit at last year’s event. The outdoor event will take place rain or shine on the lawn at the museum, which is at the intersection of State Street and Idaho 55.
Food may be purchased on site from Subway. The event is sponsored by a variety of local businesses

WICAP yard sale 2nd Cowboy Trade Days to be held at Roseberry

The second annual Cowboy Trade Days will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, in the township of Roseberry, to celebrate the ranching heritage of Valley County. Vendors from as far away as California, Oregon and Nevada will have the trappings of the cowboy on display at the Barn at Roseberry, including such things as saddles, bits, spurs and more, both for use and for decoration. Tickets on sale for Progressive Club fashion show

Tickets are now on sale for the Payette Lakes Progressive Club’s annual fashion show and luncheon to be held Tuesday, June 14, at Shore Lodge. “Flowers, Fashion, and Fun” is the theme for this year’s event. The event will get underway at 10:30 a.m. in the Pavilion Room at Shore Lodge with several boutique shopping stations featuring art, jewelry, flowering baskets and orchids, beauty products, jewelry and more. Also a Noon lunch, fashion show, silent auction and accessories by local businesses. Admission is $45 per person, $20 of which is tax deductible. Tickets are available at Mountain Monkey Business, McCall Drug and ArtiZen Gallery until June 9. Wednesday Evening Concerts at Roseberry

Roseberry announces Wednesday concert lineup! The Long Valley Preservation Society has scheduled its 2011 series of concerts on Wednesday evenings in July and August at the bandstand at Roseberry.
The concerts will start at 6:30 p.m., and those planning to attend are invited to bring a picnic supper. The Roseberry General Store will remain open until 8 p.m. on concert nights.
The series starts Wednesday, July 6, with Fast & Burning and a program of eclectic strings.
The following week has not been scheduled yet, but on July 20, High Desert Band will play bluegrass and folk music.
Other scheduled dates include Aug. 10, with Mountain Fever; Aug. 17, with Moody & Friends; and Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 features Lois Fry & Friends.
While the shows are free, donations will be accepted for the musicians. As more bands are booked, they will be included on the Web site at www.HistoricRoseberry.com.

Crab Feed in Cascade

The Cascade Community Church/DUO group will have its second annual crab feed on Saturday, May 21, at Trinity Pines Conference Center in Cascade.
For those who do not like crab, beef brisket will also be offered, along with a dessert auction and raffle. Tickets are $20 and seating is limited.
DUO is a community service group that schedules several community projects each year, and also takes a mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico, each November to build a house for a needy family.

“Kinetic Kitchen: A Dance Experiment,” is the title of a performance by the Off Center Dance troupe set for Saturday at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall.
The Off Center Dance troupe will present “Kinetic Kitchen: A Dance Experiment,” on Saturday at Alpine Playhouse. Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for students. Five new works will be featured.
Off Center Dance Project is a local modern dance company that originated in the spring of 2008 under the direction of Kelli Brown, a Boise native and graduate of McCall’s Shanti Yoga program.

Second Sunday Mother’s Day concert features Table Rock Trio
A special Mother’s Day concert featuring Boise’s Table Rock Trio has been scheduled at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Community Congregational Church at 901 First St. in McCall. Boise’s Table Rock Trio will perform during the Mother’s Day concert of Second Sunday Sounds @ 6. The concert, part of the Second Sunday Sounds @ Six series, will feature Karlin Coolidge on flute, Carola Winkle on clarinet and Marlys Saltzer, a part-time McCall resident, on piano.
The trio will perform works by Brahms, Bizet, Debussy and others in a program titled “Dances and Other Delights.” The concert is free, although donations will be accepted.

Hells Canyon Mailboats

Author and instructor Carole Simon-Smolinski will talk about the mailboats of Hells Canyon at a free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Meadows Valley Public Library in New Meadows. The boats, intrepid captains and the national and international attention their unique mail service attracted each contributes a fascinating chapter in the Hells Canyon saga. For more than 20 years, Simon-Smolinski has been an instructor and scholar of Northwest history, specifically the north central area of Idaho. Her work has included articles, books, talks and videos. Simon-Smolinski recently concluded 16 years as a history instructor at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston. The program is funded in part by the Idaho Humanities Council. Alpine to host Women’s Fantasy Night Friday
A “Women’s Fantasy Night” has been scheduled starting at 7 p.m. Friday at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall. The evening gives women a chance to perform on stage as a fundraiser for the playhouse.
Admission is $5 at the door and an item for the food bank, and the theme is items from the pantry. The event is for women ages 16 and older.
In past years, performances have included singing, dancing, flying, ranting, laughing, reciting poetry or other writing, showing art work, playing instruments, stand-up comedy and improvisation.
Performers are encouraged to keep their performances short. For those wishing to participate in a scenario, trained improvisers will be on hand to assist.

The Sushi Bar in McCall will be hosting a fundraiser through Sunday to assist with relief efforts in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami that struck the country earlier this month.
The restaurant will have a special menu with items priced at $5 to $25, and all of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. Cash donations will also be accepted.
Restaurant hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant is located at 415 Railroad Ave. For more information, call 634-7875.

Walkers to present Mekong River trip March 24

Pete and Norma Walker of New Meadows will present a video of a recent trip they took down the Mekong River through Cambodia and Vietnam at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at the Meadows Valley Public Library. The trip begins at Hanoi, Vietnam, and Ha Long Bay, where they went aboard a junk before proceeding to Cambodia. In Cambodia, the Walkers visited the ancient ruins of the city of Angkor, before boarding ship and heading down the Mekong River to Vietnam. After the river trip, they visited Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), before flying to Luang Prabang, Laos, where they met a friend from Nepal. They visited eastern Laos and the Plain of Jars. A video of an African photo safari will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, as part of the Armchair Travelogue Series at the McCall Public Library.
Dennis Marguet of Cascade will present a 38-minute video of a trip he and his wife June took in June, 2009.
The couple was part of a group of 10 people who visited countries including Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe, traveling by small plane, bus and safari trucks.
The group visited wild animal parks including Chole National Park in Botswana, Mudumu National Park and Namibia and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe.
They also visited Johannesburg, South Africa, the Okavano Delta and Victoria Falls. The presentation is free and is sponsored by the Friends of the McCall Public Library

An art auction and dinner to aid MCPAWS Regional Animal Shelter will be held Monday at Gallery 55 and Northwest Passage in downtown McCall.
Bidding is now open for a silent auction of artwork donated by member of Gallery 55. The auction will close the night of the dinner.
On Monday, a hosted wine reception will begin a 6 p.m. in the gallery, after which a four-course dinner will be served next door at Northwest Passage.

The Polar Plunge is a fundraising event to benefit two local youth programs, the MYST Mentoring Program and the Positive Outdoor Teen Service (POTS) Garden Project. We invite you to take the plunge into our icy pool of water on your own or create a team with family, friends or co-workers. The official Plunge uniform is only a swimsuit and water shoes (costumes are optional but encouraged and must be appropriate). Plungers must raise a minimum of $100 to be eligible to plunge. M-D High School to host music festival concert Jan. 10

McCall-Donnelly High School will host the High Mountain Music Festival concert on Monday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s gym.
The concert will feature the high school bands and choirs of schools from area schools. The students will arrive in McCall in the morning and will spend the day rehearsing with two University of Idaho music professors, after which they will form one large band and one large choir. Band students will be working with Alan Gemberling, associate professor and director of bands at the University of Idaho, while the choir will be working with Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at the university.

The theme of the carnival is “100 Years of McCall” in celebration of the city of McCall’s centennial.

A Community Carol-along

The 14th annual Christmas Celebration: A Community Carol-along will be performed at 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday at the McCall Community Congregational Church, 901 First St. Street, McCall. The concerts are free to the public, but donations are encouraged. Using 61 hand bells, the same number generally used by a 13-person hand bell choir, Energico brings a fresh energy to hand-bell ringing. They switch bells and employ various techniques and teamwork.
